SciencePHYSICS Heat and its Effects Inducing curiosity: Students became very uncomfortable yet curious wondered why fans were swittched off on a summer day and then turned on again after 20 seconds. Then they were asked to share their feelings and points of veiw in two cases-- when the fan had been swtiched off and when the fan had been swtiched on again. After discussion, they recognised the significance of a small step and understood the meaning of hot and cold. With the help of a lab activity, various effects of heat were observed by the students: • Expansion in solids: expansion of a wire • Expansion in liquids: expansion of water • Expansion in gases: expansion of LPG Links for related activities: youtube.com/watch?v=I1AX6SINhFE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJqKSElcPvs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpF0zO-TXMAm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8Myxh6Cd5A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KrX0Pygcq0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JuKqkZVgTU ADDITIONAL LINKS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UtfegG4DU8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpF0zO-TXMA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8Myxh6Cd5A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KrX0Pygcq0 With the help of a discussion and the use of thermometer students understood the difference between the heat and temperature. Students visited the Physics Lab to observe the clinical and laboratory thermometer and their difference. Students presented poster on the difference between the two types of thermometers. Students used a thermometer to check the temperature of her/ his classmate. They also explained the proper way to use a thermometer and the precautions that need to be taken care of while using the thermometers. In addition, students understood the different units of temperature like Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin. Students understood and practiced numerical on the conversion of degree Celsius to Fahrenheit and vice-versa. With the help of a class activity, students differentiated between different modes of heat transfer: 1) Conduction 2) Convection 3) Radiation. In continuation, students understood the practical application of conduction used in real life and were able to differentiate between conductors and insulators. CHEMISTRY The students built upon their learning of Physical and Chemical changes by differentiating the properties of the original substances (reactants) from the properties of a newly formed substance (product) after a chemical reaction. They recalled the first twenty elements through an ‘Element Song’ that leads them to understand the Valency Concept. The students learnt the valency for driving the chemical formula for the valency of the given elements. They also learnt to convert a chemical reaction into a chemical equation. They brainstormed to reason out a chemical change being called a Chemical Reaction. A HOTS and summarizing activity was designed for them by showing a video based on the burning of a magnesium ribbon and displacement reaction of the iron nail with copper sulphate solution. They observed and recorded the changes and finally drew their inferences regarding the same. Further, they carried out hands-on experiment to carry out the reaction of Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda) with vinegar and learnt to identify and confirm the evolution of Carbon Dioxide gas by passing the evolved gas through lime water. They also understood different types of chemical reactions through videos and shared their understanding through Think, Pair and Share strategy in class. Post this, the students collaborated in pairs, to classify the given reaction into different types. They learnt how different materials required for photosynthesis reach the leaves. They learnt about Osmosis and its role in transporting water to leaves from the ground. They drew a parallel between the action of xylem vessels during the process of transpiration and the way water is pulled up by a straw. The students were shown a video of the opening and closing of the stomata under a microscope. They also watched a video emphasising the fact that chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis. It led them to consolidate the learning that in variegated leaves, photosynthesis does not happen in the absence of chlorophyll. They also researched the Saprophytic Mode of Nutrition and discussed the same in class. Students also made a detailed Mind Map of the chapter. They enjoyed a Class Quiz to assess the understanding of the topic done. Nutrition in Animals: A discussion was held for recollecting all the prior knowledge about the topic-- organs of the digestive system and its basic functions. The Class Notebook tool on MS Teams was used to label the diagram of the digestive system and write the function of the organs.
