“Nothing can dim the light that shines from within.” - Maya Angelou Nurturing November has been a month of celebrations and happiness all around. It was a time of festivities and celebrations. November has been another month of learning new concepts with the maximum participation in different activities which not only honed the skills of the students but also gave them a platform to showcase their talent. The universal theme ‘I am tolerant’ proved to be a big support for the young minds with the help of which the value of being tolerant and contented was inculcated well. The students happily narrated their personal experiences during the discussion time in the morning assembly sessions pondering over the idea of tolerance from different perspectives and understanding. They could understand the value of showing consideration and regard for others. They shared their happiness by contributing beautifully to the project ‘Spreading Smiles’ where they thought selflessly about everyone and tried to make an effort to add happiness to others’ lives too. The universal value could be easily related to the virtues like team spirit and sportsmanship as we enthusiastically took part in the Suncity Run 2.0 with great zeal and the zest. The proud Suncitizens displayed their ardour and passion by celebrating Diwali on the virtual platform integrating all five languages while sharing the significance of the festival. The beautifully integrated ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ activity as a tribute to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose with a talk followed by singing the song ‘Kadam Kadam Badhaye Ja’. The students commenced their morning assemblies every day with beautiful thoughts and enriching words. They enjoyed reading the NIE with a focus on current affairs and interesting articles. Mathematics RATIONAL NUMBERS: A prior knowledge check of ‘Fractions and Integers’ was done with the help of examples in an interactive session with the students. The learners deduced that rational numbers are a combination of fractions and integers. With further practice, the students understood the concept and application of the same. Students also practiced the following concepts: Positive and Negative Rational Numbers Rational Numbers on a Number Line Comparison of Rational Numbers Rational Numbers between two Rational Numbers Operations on Rational Numbers The practice exercises from the textbook and worksheets were discussed to strengthen their conceptual knowledge. PERIMETER AND AREA: The topic ‘Plane Figures of 2D shapes & their Perimeter and Area’ was discussed with the help of day to day examples. Students gave various examples where they could see 2D shapes – like smart boards, study tables, basketball courts etc. With more discussion and practice, students understood the difference between Area and Perimeter very well. Students also practiced the following concepts: Area of Squares and Rectangles Perimeter and Area of Irregular Shapes Triangles as Parts of Rectangles Generalizing for Other Congruent Parts of Rectangles INTEGRATION with ART- SUBJECT ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY Students themselves derived the Area of Triangle and Parallelogram from a rectangle through a paper cutting activity. The practice exercises from the textbook and worksheets were also done which helped in the strengthening of their conceptual knowledge. Science Physics: The topic ‘Resistance and Heating Effects of Electric Current’ commenced with an inquiry session about the reaction of electric devices when electric current flows through them. The students learnt about resistance and the factors affecting it through ‘Think, Pair and Share Activity’ done in Break-Out Rooms. The students pondered upon the reasons behind using long and thick wires for the transmission of electricity. Delving deeper into ‘Heating Effects of Electric Current’, a few more examples of electrical appliances based on the heating effects were discussed, such as electrical heating appliances, electric bulbs, and electric fuse through the help of video tutorials, etc. They all were given a 10-minute research task during the class. MCB- Replacement of electric fuse post which they shared their research work with peers. Through this platform, they learnt about the properties of acids, the reaction of acids with metals and metal carbonates and recorded their observations in their notebooks. They also became familiar with the ‘Identification Test’ (lime water test) for carbon dioxide gas. With the help of audio-visual aids, they understood the neutralisation reaction between acids and bases and the role of phenolphthalein in the reaction. A revision worksheet was also designed for them to help recall the types of indicators and uses of acids & bases in our daily lives. The same was integrated with art where the young minds made posters depicting the properties of acids & bases and their different chemical reactions. They were able to differentiate between breathing and respiration. The students learnt that respiration is a cellular process that can happen in the presence and absence (both) of oxygen. They discovered that when they jump on a spot for a longer time, their calf muscles start paining; this is due to the accumulation of lactic acid which is prepared during respiration in the absence of oxygen. They made a model of the respiratory system using a plastic bottle, balloons and straws to understand the inhalation and exhalation process. They also understood the process of breathing, primarily about the exchange of gases in the lungs with the help of diagrams and videos. Responsive web design adds more layers of complexity to design and develop websites.” The students learnt to simulate WebPages with basic web designing tags. They also learnt the rules for writing HTML codes and tags like Heading, Paragraph, Line Break, HR, Comment, Bold etc. They prepared a simple webpage using these essential tags and CSS. They explored putting background colour and an image as background. Social Science History: November is the month that reminds us to be thankful for the festive season that uplifts our mood and brings new energy to our lives. The month started with a new topic ‘Tribal and Nomadic Communities’ with ‘Flipped Classroom Strategy’. Students participated in a team-building research activity where they explored the lifestyle, culture, skills, location and occupation of Ahom, Munda and Gond tribes. The teams worked upon their research, collaboration & presentation skills and culminated with insightful presentations. (Integration of ICT as a tool). Taking learning further to an experiential mode, a new topic ‘Religious Belief and Popular Movements’ was introduced where students were introduced to the deep meaning of ‘Bhakti’ which emphasizes complete surrender of oneself to god. Students were familiarised with the main features of the ‘Bhakti Movement’ which started in the 18th century as a fusion of myriad cultures, new religious ideas and beliefs. They were made to compare & contrast the different religious sects ‘Alvars and Nayanars’ and two different forms of worship ‘Nirguna and Saguna’. Two short videos were shown based on different saints of the Bhakti Movement and the ways they popularised their ideologies. Students marked and identified the regions associated with famous Bhakti saints on a political map of India (Map Reading Activity). The topic was well integrated with Hindi where they recited different couplets of Kabir and Guru Nanak along with their meanings and appraised their importance in real life.
