Jubilant July has seen an enthusiastic start after a refreshing summer break for everyone. We reflected on our students learning by recollecting the exclusive experiences garnered during the fun-filled summer break. The month started with new learnings and students continued to enhance their knowledge by way of class discussions, videos, presentations and various class activities. The complete cycle of 1st Unit Test was conducted, doubt clearing sessions, revision, discussion of question papers, distribution of answer scripts….all completed with clockwork precision. The universal theme of the month ‘I am Honest’ was reiterated and inculcated in the Life Skill lessons and by way of stories and discussions. MATHEMATICSSIMPLE EQUATIONS: The lesson began by checking student’s previous knowledge of Simple Equations in daily life through a discussion. Students gave various examples like – what is variable, what is an equation, different between expression and equation etc. Students also practiced the following concepts:
Quizizzes and participated enthusiastically in the doubt clarification sessions. The Practice exercises from the textbook and worksheets were done which strengthened their conceptual knowledge. SCIENCE Science Experiments: Explore, Observe and Experiment Young minds learn by exploring, observing and experimenting. Physics: the learners enhanced their learning of heat and temperature a step further By exploring the concept of convection and radiation by ‘hands on activity’ using a candle and spoon. Real-world connections are a vital part of our students’ inquiry journey. They engaged in group discussions with the help of real life examples of convection like working of chimneys and exhaust fans and presence of ventilations at home , the concept was further explained in detail. https://www.wisc-online.com/learn/natural-science/earth-science/sce304/heat-transfer-conduction-convection-radiation http://aven.amritalearning.com/index.php?sub=100&brch=295&sim=1475&cnt=3393 Chemistry: The learners were introduced to the new lesson, ‘Soil.’ They participated in many fun experiments throughout the lesson. They collected samples of different types of soils for their scientific investigation. Learners took a closer look into the soil samples to observe their texture and compare them. Visual learning through video tutorials on formation of soil was shown and explained for concept understanding . Further, they explored the composition and different horizons and composition of soil by observing different layers of soil by allowing the water-soil mixture to settle for a few minutes. They also explored different soil horizons by using simple kitchen materials like vinegar, oil and spices and compared their observation with actual soil horizons. All students enjoyed and understood the concept of soil horizons. https://youtu.be/kybPmB1zBUw Biology- Nutrition in animals For the initiation of this topic the students were first engaged to think about the various types of modes of nutrition they observe in animals and insects they see around themselves and they noted their observations. They recalled their learning about the human digestive system and its organs by labelling a diagram and shared their knowledge about the functions of the organs. Further the students were shown how food goes down through the Oesophagus with the help of a straw and semi-solid food. In addition they also understood that the process of digestion starts in their mouth by performing a starch test using raw potato and betadine solution (contains iodine) and observes the change in colour of solution from brown to blue-black. SOCIAL SCIENCEHistory- The Mughal Empire On returning after a refreshing summer break, the students shared their new learning and experiences with each other. The learning commenced with recapitulating the prior knowledge of the First battle of Panipat by using a mini quiz on Quizizz.com. An animated video was shown to the children which helped them get familiarized with the rulers of Mughal dynasty. With the help of mind map, children were able to comprehend different phases of the Mughal dynasty. An interactive map reading session was done in the class where children were able to locate and identify the territories annexed by Babur, Akbar and Aurangzeb respectively. Akbar’s secular approach was explained by showing the pictures and interpreting the meaning of Ibadatkhana, Sulh-i-kul and Din- i- Illahi. The topic was well integrated with SDG-13(Climate Action) where children tried to investigate about the reasons which are responsible for the Taj Mahal turning yellow in appearance. To make the class interactive, an activity was conducted where children had to Answer the Riddle based on Akbar and Birbal’s stories. Besides the above topic taught, one MS Form link was also shared for the UT-1 Revision. These sudden movements bring abrupt changes on the Earth's surface earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are the examples of these movements that are endogenic and exogenic forces of the earth. Students identified that mountains, hills, plateaus, and plains are the four major types of landforms. Tectonic plate movement under the Earth can create landforms by pushing up mountains and hills. Erosion by water and wind can wear down land and create landforms like valleys and canyons. A video was shown to students about how fold mountains are formed when two plates move together (a converging plate margin). This can be where two continental plates move towards each other or a continental and an oceanic plate. The movement of the two plates forces sedimentary rocks upwards into a series of folds. They also gained knowledge about how fault-block mountains are formed by the movement of large crustal blocks when forces in the Earth's crust pull it apart. Some parts of the Earth are pushed upward and others collapse down. The surface of the Earth can move along these faults, and displace rock layers on either side. Activity:- With the help of few hand towels and two shoe boxes students created their own fold mountains and with the help of an eraser students created fault block mountains. Students identified the voting process, Interesting information about the ink ,EVM and the 1st general election was shared to create excitement towards learning. The lesson was carried out using the ICT tool Nerapod and many interesting activities were incorporated to enhance the learning. The importance of Election Commission in democracy was explained using a PPT and the flow chart. Students also drew the flow charts in their notebook to strengthen the concept. Students were asked to draw a symbol for their political party thinking themselves as a political candidate and had to share the objective behind the symbol. They were asked to associate their logo with any SDG and to understand that every action can be linked with SDGs . With the help of open ended questions ,they shared their thoughts about the election process of India. Types of election and types of political parties were explained using the real life example of India and other countries. An interesting match the pair activity of political parties and their symbols was done to make the lesson fun. The reflection was done with the help of a quiz containing interesting questions about the election process and political parties of India. ICTThe modern technology surrounding us is entirely based on the “Number System.” Computers represent all kinds of information and data from audio, images, videos, etc. in binary numbers. The students, in ICT classes learnt Number System – Decimal, Binary, Octal and Hexadecimal number system. They also learnt conversion of Decimal into Binary and Binary into Decimal, Octal into Decimal, Hexadecimal into Decimal. They also learnt Arithmetical calculation of Binary numbers. Students had a great time exploring the Number System. The number system plays an important role in the functioning of a computer. The base conversion helps both the computer and the user to understand the data and information ENGLISHAfter the summer break, the first session began with an informal interaction with the students wherein they shared how they spent their holidays. They talked about new habits, skills acquired and a lot more. Taking the annual theme “Sohum” forward, the ethics of work and the acquisition of mindfulness were introduced through the initial discussion and pre-reading activities of the poem- “A Song from the Suds”. While the reading, post-reading tasks and the poem analysis, students got an opportunity to express their thoughts about positivity in life and the joy of working. The students shared the list of household chores they often take up and shared their experiences and feelings. Homing poem recitation skills was one of the main objectives of the lesson. The inspiring piece of poetry was followed by the classic read “Idgah’’ by Munshi Prem Chand wherein the students shared their personal experiences of buying a gift for their loved ones and going to a fete. A skimming and speed-reading strategy were followed. A detailed discussion was done about the main characters of the story as well. The essential written work was done in the notebooks and students practiced how to frame answers with detail. Besides this, the students learnt to write the character sketch, initially by using a graphic organiser “Mindmap”. The students also went into an enquiry about the eminent writer by interviewing their parents and grandparents which led them to research further. The class talked about his work around the social issues of his time and its existence currently. The grammatical concepts of nouns, pronouns and verbs were strengthened during the lessons with a focus on application. The resource material such as videos and practice sheets, MS forms, grammar book exercises and Liveworksheets supported the students learning. The students were encouraged to hone their note-taking skills and most of them displayed the same in their submissions. The strategies like Breakout Rooms and Live Quizzes made the lessons quite interesting and engaging. The skill of collaboration was kept in mind in most of the tasks.
